Day trip: Nomad Pizza Co. Hopewell, NJ

As we've shown a few times before, we're kind of pizza dorks. So you shouldn't be surprised to know that yesterday Philip traveled a few hours to meet up with some friends from SliceNY and other pizza websites at Nomad Pizza Company for a feast of epic proportions.

Nomad started out catering birthday parties and other events with their mobile wood fired oven and restored 1940's truck. That's right, a pizza truck. Just recently they opened up their restaurant bringing the same pizza to a less-mobile setting. Within the first few weeks of opening, Nomad received positive acclaim from a few blogs. Eventually Paulie Gee, Tam Ngo, and other pizzerati reported back to say "yep. this is good.". The rest as, they say, is history.*

By the time we arrived the oven was roaring and co-owner Stalin Bedon was readying his team to make enough pizzas to accommodate our group of 26.

The pizza, a neopolitan style using local organic ingredients when possible, was beautifully charred and steaming when it arrived at our table. The toppings were clearly high quality, with the buffalo mozzarella being a proper creamy consistency and the sauce being bright and flavorful.

What did everyone else think of the pizza? Well, take a look at their plates.

Many thanks to Stalin, Tom, and their team for their generosity in accommodating such a large group of camera-wielding pizza geeks.

For the rest of the photos from the evening, check out our Nomad gallery.

Thanks to Adam Kuban of SliceNY / Serious Eats, famdoc, and Paulie Gee for organizing the event, lets do it again soon!

*(Okay maybe it's actually a long and drawn out story about a pizza road trip and a bunch of New Yorkers and one guy from PA, traveling to eat at a pizza place. But, we'll just say history for now.)

Please don't thank me. I don't even recall doing anything to organize the event other than to warn the Nomad staff that we were going to invade the place. The Slicemeister and Famdoc are the ones who were more responsible than anyone. I must say that we had a great time and I'm glad that everyone seemed to enjoy it as well. I hope it lived up to the expectations that I created. It was great to see so many people come from such distances for the event.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

It was a memorable event and, hopefully, the first of many such events. There was such a diversity of people who came together in their common love of good food. My wife and I enjoyed speaking with those of you seated at our table.

Philip, you clearly have a great deal of talent. You should certainly be the official photodocumentarian of our group. And, god willing, the photographer at my daughter's wedding...but, let's not rush things: she's only 19.
